The City of Sebastopol is the Chair City of the Mayors’ and Councilmembers’ Association of Sonoma County for 2018. The Mayors’ and Councilmembers’ Association meets on a bi-monthly basis to connect and plan for the future, and this year, the theme is Emergency Services and Fire Recovery. Each meeting will contain presentations on information related to Fire Recovery and each host City will recognize organizations that supported our communities during the fires from their cities.
In early February, Mayor Patrick Slayter hosted the first of five Association meetings for the year. Matt Martin from Redwood Credit Union, Chris Helgren from the Sonoma County Office of Emergency Services, and volunteers from PALS (Paws as Loving Support) Assistance Dogs presented on the work they’ve done to help our communities recover from the October wildfires. Sonoma County Supervisors Lynda Hopkins and Shirlee Zane were also in attendance.
Mayor Slayter himself is a PALS volunteer, along with his dog, Hawke. PALS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the human/animal bond by providing specially trained dogs in many circumstances. After the fires, PALS teams made hundreds of visits to shelters, the Fairgrounds, and schools as they re-opened to provide emotional support and social therapy. Members of PALS were at the meeting last week to share their mission to provide assistance to anyone needing a helping “paw.”
